How does radiation therapy treat breast cancer?

The treatment of breast cancer depends on many different factors, such as age, health status, the stage of breast cancer, the size of the tumor, and the type of cancer cells. The following five categories are the main treatment methods:

● Surgical procedure

● Chemotherapy

● Radiation therapy

● Hormone therapy

● Targeted therapy

What is radiation therapy?

Many people have questions about radiation therapy for breast cancer. Radiation therapy uses X-rays to kill cancer cells and is typically used after breast cancer surgery; however, it is sometimes used before surgery, or even as an alternative. The goal of radiation therapy is to ensure that any remaining cancer cells are eliminated. If the entire breast has been removed, but doctors believe that some cancer cells may still remain in the chest wall, radiation therapy may be prescribed to prevent recurrence. The process of radiation therapy is painless and each session lasts only a few minutes. Treatment is usually performed five days a week and is completed in about six weeks. Radiation therapy may cause the breasts to feel tighter and may affect their shape or size.
