Doctor Q&A

I found a lump in my left breast and had surgery to preserve my breast (removal of the lump and lymph node examination). The doctor said it was stage 1 breast cancer with no lymph node spread, but I need to have 4 rounds of chemotherapy and 30 rounds of radiotherapy. I would like to know what chemotherapy drugs are available? Which one is less painful?

The doctor likely recommended the chemotherapy drugs Docetaxel (Taxotere) and Cyclophosphamide, commonly known as the TC chemotherapy regimen. Docetaxel is one of the taxane (paclitaxel) class of chemotherapy drugs. Previously, there were anthracycline-based chemotherapy drugs, but studies showed that, with the same number of treatments, taxane-based chemotherapy drugs were more effective than anthracycline-based drugs in reducing the ten-year recurrence risk by nearly 40% and reducing breast cancer mortality by nearly 25% to 30%. Therefore, taxane-based chemotherapy has become the first choice for adjuvant chemotherapy. Among taxane-based chemotherapy drugs, there is also a drug called nano-albumin-bound paclitaxel (Nab-paclitaxel), which has fewer side effects compared to other paclitaxel-based drugs. Currently, its data is more mature in preoperative chemotherapy, but in specific situations, the existing regimen can be considered as the backbone of adjuvant therapy.
